Visiting Mellor provides time to relax, take stock, make new friends and plans, renew bonds within the family and rebuild relationships away from the pressures of the daily grind and a stressful and unhealthy environment where opportunities for fun and fresh air are non existent.
Despite the vast social changes since the house was built, the need for the respite offered by Mellor house is as great as ever. In recent years around 1,000 guests have stayed each year, around half are children, who particularly enjoy the freedom of playing in the grounds, on the cycle track, and the climbing frames and trees away from the dangers of the city streets. In addition to the families who visit, there is a wide range of groups with special needs and many other visitors are single and elderly.
Families are referred by other Charities and Social Services or by personal approach, from urban areas of Manchester and Salford. At the house we facilitate training and development for some of our visitors e.g. youth groups to improve their employability through a series of planned exercises and team building events. These include life skills, Job Search, Numeracy and Literacy.
For many of the older folk who visit it really does mean returning "home" to surroundings they have enjoyed for a short time each year as a stable and peaceful point of reference in otherwise difficult and lonely lives.
