Why Mellor?

Visiting Mellor provides time to relax, take stock, make new friends and plans, renew bonds within the family and rebuild relationships away from the pressures of the daily grind and a stressful and unhealthy environment where opportunities for fun and fresh air are non existent.

Despite the vast social changes since the house was built, the need for the respite offered by Mellor house is as great as ever. In recent years around 1,000 guests have stayed each year, around half are children, who particularly enjoy the freedom of playing in the grounds, on the cycle track, and the climbing frames and trees away from the dangers of the city streets. In addition to the families who visit, there is a wide range of groups with special needs and many other visitors are single and elderly.

Families are referred by other Charities and Social Services or by personal approach, from urban areas of Manchester and Salford. At the house we facilitate training and development for some of our visitors e.g. youth groups to improve their employability through a series of planned exercises and team building events. These include life skills, Job Search, Numeracy and Literacy.

For many of the older folk who visit it really does mean returning "home" to surroundings they have enjoyed for a short time each year as a stable and peaceful point of reference in otherwise difficult and lonely lives.

Messages from our visitors

"Thanks for a very relaxing couple of days, my group has recharged their batteries and had a marvellous time, all the members were new and visited for the first time. They all enjoyed it and are very thankful for everything."

"I came back to Mellor for the second time to recapture the feelings of peace and tranquillity. A home from home, so cosy, comfortable and welcoming, it makes one realise where you would love to be as I head back to the City."

"Thanks for the privilege of re-living a wonderful childhood dream, and for caring for my mother in such an outstanding environment."

"I really loved it here very much. I loved the gardens, the snooker table and the beds were warm and comfy, and I never want to go home."

"We have had a wonderful time, just not long enough, wish we could stay at least six months, the best stress therapy ever."

"Enjoyed it a lot more than I thought, I was not too conscious with the four children as the house caters for them. I have had a very nice time."

"It was great, good feedback from the group, hope to visit again, and the lovely atmosphere helps us make the short breaks a great success."

"Thank you for all you are doing in running such a lovely house so we can relax and enjoy it and its surroundings. Lots of space and lots to do around the area, lots of opportunities to go out and about in the countryside."

"The house is a wonderful and welcoming, a great place to inspire our singing, thank you so much."
